Escaping Your Mental Prison
So you’re struggling with something in your life.
We all are.
Some things may seem they’ve been thrown at us, while other things we’ve (sometimes unknowingly) brought upon ourselves. Our struggles, regardless of their origin, can lead us to believe that we are “trapped” and that our situations have sentenced us to an awful mental prison. Now, if you’re content being mentally imprisoned, then by all means, don’t read any further. But if you know deep down that there’s more to life than your current situation, then it’s time to take massive action and make a change. The prison of your mind is real—and it will hold you back until you decide to break free.
Continue reading as we discuss these cranial confinements along with a few tips on how you can make your great escape...
Where is the Prison Located?
You probably know some of the most notorious maximum-security prisons off the top of your head. Guantanamo Bay, Alcatraz, and Folsom just to name a few.
Did you forget to mention the one right between your ears?
Mental prisons have the highest security known to man. They are guarded by the architect, who has placed each brick and bar with precision and knows every detail of the structure perfectly. Now, the architect does something interesting. They live in the prison that they built, incarcerating themselves unconsciously. It seems like a strange occurrence, but it happens more often than you think. To put it plainly, you are the architect. And the prison you have built is actually what you deem as “reality.”
How Did This Happen?
To take an excerpt from Chris M. King’s book, Renegotiate Your Existence Unlock Your Impossible Life:
“We’re all trapped in the reality of our understanding that we create, validate, and recreate daily. Whatever situation, job, or life you’re currently in, it began with beliefs… these beliefs include a limited mindset or a self-concept keeping you locked in your past and limited in your future. And they are completely out of alignment with your dreams.”
Ouch. Truth hurts, doesn’t it?
But you’re starting to wake up! It’s important to remember that breaking out of your mental prison is 100% possible. But there’s necessary footwork required.
Become Accountable
If you’re looking to escape your mental prison, you need to take responsibility and ownership for yourself. Which means becoming accountable. How? Take a moment and think about all of the things that have held you back in life and be honest with yourself about them. Whatever it is, embrace it as best as possible and get past these negative emotions by taking small actions every day toward goals bigger than surviving until tomorrow.Remember this...no one can hold you down except for yourself! Once you recognize and accept that idea, breaking out of your mental prison becomes much easier. A way to really know what’s holding you back is for you to dig deep inside yourself on both emotional and logical levels; it’s unlikely it will happen overnight, so keep working toward what makes sense for YOU on YOUR journey and eventually, success will come.
Change your Internal Dialogue
People often talk about their internal dialogue regarding whether it is positive or negative. In fact, most people spend more time thinking about what’s wrong with their lives than they do thinking of ways to make them better. While some of us use our minds to focus on things that help us reach our goals, many others are stuck in a negative cycle which prevents them from even trying new things. If your internal dialogue isn’t focused on making yourself better, then chances are your actions won’t be either.
Go Outside Your Comfort Zone
Many people mistakenly think that if they go outside their comfort zone, they’ll lose control. In reality, getting outside your comfort zone is one of the best ways to learn new things about yourself. Being uncomfortable doesn’t mean being in danger; it means you’re doing something different from what you normally do.
Embrace the challenge and understand that trying new things can do more for your sense of well-being than staying inside your comfort zone ever can. Every time you try something new, there’s a chance for failure... and there’s also great potential for success. If you don’t try anything, you won’t fail or succeed, and nothing will change.
Build on Successes
Building on your successes and learning from your failures is a sure way to break out of your mental prison. Every failure is an opportunity to learn, as long as you’re willing to treat it that way. Learn how to make more time for your passions, and how to transform your life into something worth living. Keep working at it and don’t give up! Remember that you’re always one decision away from a new reality.
