How to remove the barriers to becoming a great leader

“To create a high-performance team, we must replace typical management activities like supervising, checking, monitoring, and controlling with new behaviors like coaching and communicating.” — Chris M. King

Remove the barriers to becoming anything you dream you can be. Just get rid of them!

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were as easy as reading those words?  In reality, it takes attention, willingness to change and a desire to get better (even if you’re not sick). When you sit and think about what is keeping you from greatness - really sit and examine what holds you back - you may have to look at the possibility that fear or shame are standing in your way.

Start here:

Do you ever feel stuck in your ways? Like you are trying to move forward but there is a physical barrier stopping you. The physical feeling is the manifestation of a mental block that is holding you back from your ideal state. To move forward, these blocks must be addressed. It's time to unpack the obstacles standing in the way of achieving all that you’ve been dreaming of.In unpacking the barriers to success, we often find that these barriers are only real in our own minds. To move forward in a clear state of being, we must remove what scares or stops us from achieving success, from growing into our roles and from being in a place where “flow” is possible. But how? How can you change what is largely unconscious or is so deeply ingrained that we don’t examine those behaviors anymore?

You must hack and recode your system.

So you want to be great? Step one is to change your mindset from “I want” to “I need”. If you needed to be great, what would you do to change your outlook.  If you truly NEEDED to be great, would your attention shift, what would that do to your daily activities? A great leader puts their immediate wants aside and focuses the needs of the team and the business. If you want to be great, if you want your team to achieve unimaginable goals, challenge yourself to ask not only what are your personal professional needs, but also what are the needs of your team? What is needed to make them more successful?

To understand the needs of your team, ask!

To be a great leader, you need to understand each of your employees and what helps them achieve success. What do they need to perform at their best each day? Do they need an extra hour in the morning to attend a workout class or take their children to school? Or maybe they need more immediate and relevant feedback during tasks. Needs are different for everyone but this attention to detail can transform you from being a good leader to a great leader.

Take it from one of my previous executive coaching clients:

“To create a high-performance team, we must replace typical management activities like supervising, checking, monitoring, and controlling with new behaviors like coaching and communicating.”Whether you’re an individual or part of an executive team, the same is true in achieving professional and personal goals. Ensuring alignment between mental frameworks, actions, and goals is “cognitive personal training” and is necessary to achieve peak performance, leading you to become a great leader.
