You can be right or you can be successful
“You have to give up being right. You can either be right or you can be successful.”
- Chris M. King
One question that resonates with me and drives my business is the question: “do you want to be right, or do you want to get your goal accomplished?”
Think about this for a second. Does it bring up any emotion? Now, take a step back and think about what you gain from being right. Instant gratification, a pat on the back? Sure. If being right is at the core of your leadership, you won’t be remembered for being “right,” you’ll be remembered for having an inflated ego.
How Do You Want to Be Remembered?
Most people are remembered for their success, growth, and poise. At least that's what you would want to be remembered by, rather than your unwillingness to compromise. Buckle up, it's time to swallow your pride and kick down those “I need to be right” barriers. Now, you can focus on accomplishing goals that drive you closer to success.
Good and bad, right and wrong, true and false are all subjective.
If I make a statement that agrees with your experience, you’ll say that the statement is true. However, if it disagrees with your experience, you’ll say that it’s false. Imagine someone who has lived their entire life only being outside at night. Would they agree with you that the sky is blue? Unlikely.
What about a court case where one person wins and the other loses?
The winner will say the outcome was good and the loser will suggest otherwise. The circumstances don’t change. The way people perceive them does. The next time you’re in the midst of a conflict... stop. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, “Is it more important to be right or is it more important to accomplish the goal?” Let go of trying to prove that you’re right and strategize about how to make that goal happen. If we set aside these constructs and release the notions of good/bad, right/wrong, true/false, we can look through the lens of “being right” or “being successful”. When you put your ego aside, you will be more equipped to lead your company to success.
