The Power of Balance: How to Tap into Your Feminine and Masculine Energy for Success
In this day and age, it’s easy to resort to labels. For some, labels are what they base their entire lives around. Others couldn’t care less how people see them.In terms of the topic of this blog, it could be tempting to label feminine energy only with women and masculine energy only with men. But this simply isn’t the case. In fact, feminine and masculine energy doesn’t have much to do with gender, but rather the characteristics and attributes that contribute to a person as a whole.
So let’s talk about the differences and the benefits of learning to harness those energies to become a well-balanced leader in all areas of your life.
An Introduction to Feminine & Masculine Energies
The balance between feminine and masculine energies has long been championed as a way to achieve success, both personally and professionally. The most successful leaders understand that they benefit from both energies in order to be their best. Studies have shown that having a balanced amount of each energy can lead to increased performance by up to 20%.
To better understand how feminine and masculine energies affect leadership, take some time to explore what they are. For example, many believe that a true leader must be powerful, assertive, competitive, bold, aggressive and authoritative. These traits are typically considered masculine in nature. However, there is another side of leadership that is often overlooked—one that is sensitive, empathetic, cooperative and peace-seeking. These are qualities typically considered feminine.
Test Yourself: Which Energy Do You Currently Favor?
Take a look at the following questions to see where you line up. This is a way to gauge how you see yourself and where you might find a need to balance your qualities.
(1) I am assertive.
(2) I solve problems logically.
(3) I use logic when dealing with people.
(4) I look at an issue from many sides before making a decision.
If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then you’re exhibiting traditional masculine energy in your work. Now let's look at the other side of the coin. Check your stance on the following:
(1) I value relationships more than logic.
(2) I prefer harmony over competition.
(3) It doesn't bother me to not have all the answers/ understanding is fluid.
(4) I seek to create value in my life and in the lives around meIf you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then you're showing traditional feminine energy in your work.
Looking at the questions as a whole now, where do you stand? Are you favoring one energy more than the other? How would you feel if you began to tap into some of the characteristics of the opposite side?
I challenge you to see what happens when you do.
What Makes an Outstanding Leader?
At first glance, a top-tier leader might look like they achieved their status due to their level of technical or business knowledge, skills, or traits such as charisma or creativity. While those characteristics are noteworthy, a leader who is able to balance the feminine and masculine qualities will be able to consistently adapt and navigate the responsibilities of their call.Think about it like yin-yang (not just in your business but also in other aspects of your life). Yin is represented by a dark circle with a white dot in its center, while yang’s opposite is light-colored with a black dot at its center. These two energies work together as equal but opposing forces; they are interdependent, like day and night or hot and cold. When one is present, its opposite must also be present in order to maintain balance. This is a similar concept with masculine and feminine energy in leadership. When you have an outstanding leader who is able to balance their masculine and feminine energy well, it creates a certain synergy that allows them to lead more effectively than others who lack such balance.
How Teams Respond to These Energies
On a team, both energies are important. They complement each other. Teams led by people who take an equal mix of feminine and masculine energy have greater access to creativity, collective problem solving, assertiveness, collectivism, consensus building, flexibility. In addition, when these leaders tap into their own femininity or masculinity in meetings, they can inspire loyalty and trust from their employees. But if there is too much of one energy or not enough of another on a team, it can lead to problems. For example, if there is too much feminine energy (which can be nurturing) on a team that also needs some more assertive leadership (masculine), then it will be difficult for that leader to get his or her point across. Or, if there is too much masculine energy (which can be aggressive) on a team that also needs more collaboration and cooperation (feminine), then it will be hard for that leader to build relationships with others. Finally, teams with no balance between feminine and masculine energy will often feel stuck—they won’t know what direction to go in.
5 Tips for Developing Feminine/Masculine Energy-Balanced Leadership
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of ways to develop your feminine/masculine energy. As mentioned previously, each one of us has masculine and feminine qualities within us. Below is a list of tips you can use immediately when working with others—or on yourself– to reach optimal leadership balance in your work environment and at home. Use these tips as a starting point to begin cultivating an overall healthier balance between your feminine and masculine energies.
(1) Make decisions from your heart AND mind, not from fear or ego. Fear makes you contract; inclusivity and love make you expand.
(2) Act from integrity instead of self-interest. Doing what’s right instead of what’s expedient will ultimately serve both you and those around you best.
(3) Don’t try to control others; rather, lead by example. When you take responsibility for your own life, it inspires others to do so as well.
(4) Make decisions based on shared values, not just individual needs or wants. A win-win situation will always be better than a win-lose one.
(5) Remember that feminine energy is about creating new possibilities; masculine energy is about making things happen. You need both energies working together in order to reach your goals and aspirations.
